GDM Theme in Ubuntu 11.04

GNOME - Jul 9 2011
answered
Question:How to install GDM Theme which is obtained from this website in UBUNTU 11.04? I am new to linux please help..

Answer:GDM theme changing is possible. The method have just changed a bit. Do the following to customize gdm background and theme and icons appearing there:
-------
#Open terminal:

sudo cp /usr/share/applications/gnome-appearance-properties.desktop /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow

#Logout from the system. Customizations will open. Do them. Log in.

#Unlink appearance preference applications--- prevents future autostarts of gdm customizations in every login ocasion.

sudo unlink /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow/gnome-appearance-properties.desktop

#Note some customizations do not kick in instantly in every section: when you have done them. So remember to restart gdm for example by restarting a computer once you have done your customations.
-------
Have a nice day
Zack

It seems as though it's not been possible for quite some time now not to install GDM themes on Ubuntu. So far it's possible to change the background which in my opinion is kinda lame in comparison to what could've been done a few versions back.

As I said, it's not possible.

If you knew how add GDM themes to ubuntu 11.04, then you would probably be the first person to discover it.

With your answer you simply demonstrate how to change the gtk theme of the Login screen, but in no way does it demonstrate how to install a GDM theme. Although theoretically speaking, a GDM theme is a GTK theme, so one may argue that. However, a GDM theme is made specifically for login windows, and I believe the author of this question was referring to that type of GDM theme.

For example, if you go to gnome-look.org, and start looking for GDM themes, your method for installing them will not work on them for Ubuntu 11.04. As a matter of fact, GDM themes have stopped being supported for gnome in ubuntu ever since Ubuntu 9.10. And if you've been using Ubuntu prior to that version, you would truly know what it would be like to change a GDM theme.

And if in fact you only do wish to change your gtk theme, background, and icons for your login window, then I would recommend using Ubuntu tweak.
More information can be found at this site:

Note that this will still not be able to help you install GDM themes that you download from the website.

So in all, I don't agree to the answer for this question.
