Installing Icon Themes, Gnome Menu Icons

GNOME - Jun 18 2009
not answered
Question:These are probably stupid questions, but I think it's important to have these in the Knowledge Base.

How do you install icon themes? I've tried opening them as a theme in the Appearance Preferences, but it always says it's an invalid theme.

How do I change the icons and font in the Gnome Menu? I found a code that brought up a nice gui interface where I could change just about anything in the menu. Anyone know what that is?

I think there should be tutorials for how to install the different types of themes.

I just installed a theme by extracting it, then moved it to ~/.icons and selected it from the Appearance Preference window.

Nice theme too; "hydroxygen".

Is this the right (normal) way to do this or was it a bit of a strange way?

not sure but i think that you can also install the theme directly via the gnome appearance app. it copys the data in the package in the right directories, i think (been a while since i last used gnome ;) )

best regards & good luck

The gnome-appearance-settings app install feature works only with certain kinds of tarballs. I mean that only tarballs with X subdirs, each with gtk+2.0 and/or metacity subfolders plus any number of arbitrary files, are recognized as valid gnome themes. Each other hierarchy of folders inside the archive still won't be recognized by the app, so you will have to copy them manually in proper directories. e.g. gtk/metacity themes in ~/.themes, icon theme folders in ~/.icons and so on.
