Why are symlinks not showing up in the web interface?

ownCloud - Feb 13 2012
Question:I've created a few symbolic links to storage files elsewhere on the machine. They are accessible via webdav but do not show up in the web interface. I realize the answer is probably simple but I just can't figure it out. (each of the directories linked are accessible by users in the www-data group) EDIT: even if I change ownership of a directory to www-data:www-data the symlink does not show up.

Answer:I had the same problem as you, symlinks are shown in webdav and on file system but not in the webinterface.

Try this: i made a symlink to a 'music' folder with the name 'music'. Through webdav it shows up, but not in the web interface.

I logged into the web interface and created a new folder 'music' in the same spot the symlink already was. I checked back in a few minutes and behold, a folder music was there, containing all the info the original symlink has.

Here is another approach which will not require creating folders through the web interface.

1) Open your .htaccess file in the root of your server's owncloud folder.

2) Find the line beginning with the word Options and add +FollowSymLinks to the end of the line.

3) Save the .htaccess file and restart apache (This is of course on a server on which you have root access. Changing this on a shared hosted server will vary depending on the host). Example of restarting apache: /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

4) Give the symbolic link permissions to make it accessible by the web server. Example: chown -h wwwrun.www <symlink>

wwwrun is the default user for the apache server on opensuse.

The symlink should now be visible in the web interface.
