WiFi problem

GNOME - Jul 23 2010
Question:i m having a DELL INSPIRON 1545 laptop , and i m not able to get wifi connection when i run my machine on Ubuntu 9.10 or 10.4..Plz send me solution for the same.

Thanks in advance..........

Answer:I had this problem. I think this Dell has the Broadcom b43 card. In any case this link might be of use to identify the wifi card and get the driver loaded.
If it is a b43 card ubuntu will normally identify the right driver for you to accept as a proprietary driver. Accept it and you should get to the point of configuring NetworkManager. this is in Gnome or KDE also

 broadcom-sta dell inspiron 154

hey bud, i've got the same laptop, great system. the specific card is the Broadcom BCM 4312. in ubuntu lucid (10.04) the broadcom-sta driver is solid as a rock :).

it's available via jockey-gtk (Hardware Drivers). if it gives you an error about installing the broadcom-sta driver (which started happening for me in 10.04), you may want to install the kernel-headers for your installed kernel, and linux-headers-generic, as well as build-essential package that will provide the tools necessary for the broadcom-sta package to be custom compiled for your system.

note that the broadcom b43 driver offered in hardware drivers doesn't work for the model of wireless card installed in our dell system, so you really do have to use broadcom's sta driver.

let me know if you need further help, i'm brummbaer on irc.freenode.net, and i'll check back to this post to see if that did the trick for you.
