Answer:From the question I assume you installed the Fredo-theme by "System-Settings->Desktop Appearance->Desktop Design->Get new Themes", searching for "fredo", hitting the "Install"-button next to the theme. (Sorry if the names are not exactly like this...using the German translation of KDE right now so only guessing what it is called in English)

If that's the case you already did all the work...Now you only need to close the window for getting new themes and select the "fredo"-theme in the list of desktop themes in "system-settings". Once you hit "apply" the appearance of all plasma widgets should change immediately. (If that's not the case change to the "Details" tab in system-settings and make sure the Fredo theme is selected for all items there.

Sorry, only German screenshots...but should look the same in English.

Edit: According to a comment from unkownSpirit it might be necessary to logout KDE once to get the newly installed theme applied. This seems to depend on your distribution as I haven't experienced this on my box yet.

On Kubuntu 11.10 with KDE 4.7.1 I've to log out and back in to see the changes.
My old 9.10 with ancient KDE 4.3 does it immediately though, displaying what I'd call a "*sigh* heavy work 'cause you are so impatient"-bar.

Ugh...didn't know that. On my KDE 4.7.2 on Gentoo the themes show up immediately in the list. Changing the answer to reflect your input.

It's not that the theme is not displayed in the configuration dialog, it's just not applied before a restart of KDE, irregardless of what I do at runtime.
Tried this on Kubuntu live version though.
Could be a performance optimisation too.

If you speak German, your English is excellent.
thank you for your input. I do a lot of trial by error. I'm learning...

Aww, thanks, but I know my English is far from perfect...though I hope it's understandable in most cases.

And yeah...trial and error is the usual routine. So never be afraid to try out something...and keep on asking questions if needed. People around here are usually pretty nice...but it might take a few days until someone comes up for with an answer. So perfecting the art of searching the net for relevant infos for your problem is also a pretty useful skill. ;)
