why does my VLC look different?

Question:Hello,
I feel kind of stupid when looking at all the questions that are asked here, just to register..
but I just have a relatively simple question!
I am on my macbook right now and i downloaded the most recent version of vlc, or so I think. 2.1.5 rincewind? I have always loved vlc because it play ANYTHING, and for someone that is not THAT advanced with computers, it is a godsend! So tonight i was trying to figure out how to record from a streaming channel-i know it can be done, but as i was going through the different things that came up on google when i asked how to do it, i realised quite quickly that my vlc player does NOT look much like all the screenshots and pictures and descriptions that i was looking at..i actually had the 2.1.4 at first and so i upgraded to the next one, but still mine isnt the same. For example in one description as to how to record a stream, the first thing they say is to go to "media" and i do not have that.i have, file ,edit, view, playback,audio,vido,subtitles,window,help-and they are not in the little player window, they are up above after the apple. the one that seems to be everywhere is a little player with media up top then, playback,audio,video,subtitle,tools,view,help-mine doesn't have tools either. mine is bigger and in the middle has a big arrow that says 'drop media here' under it and then a button under that -that says open media. what do I have and why is it different?
