x11 mouse problem

X11 - Jun 29 2010
Question:I downloaded x11 mouse theme and installed it,but i have a problem. It is changed only in programs windows, when I go to desktop I get the default one! Why is this happening?

Answer:there are several reasons why mouse themes on linux doesn't work:

1. you have to relog (restart all apps) so they'll start using new mouse cursors
2. there's no consistency if you won't set up your mouse theme also for root account (with that you'll break cursors for other users)
3. mouse themes are usually made so they'll work with apps which use LSB standards.. so every app (don't know how many are there) which doesn't respect these standards will use default theme
4. kde and gnome have different names for some cursors so expect some of apps from other DE to use default cursors

with that said the reason why default cursor themes are so big (and different names link to same picture) is because of things mentioned above.. so if you want to have really functional mouse cursor theme you have to do all of this to make it work everywhere

btw you prolly can change default theme (i never really tried it) by creating your cursor.theme in /etc/X11/cursors and relinking /etc/alternatives/x-cursor-theme to it

this is just my observation so feel free to edit my answer if you have deeper knowledge about this
